Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is a Canadian actor best known for her portrayal of Devi Vishwakumar in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series, Never Have I Ever. A Tamil-Canadian born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Maitreyi had never acted professionally before landing the part through an open casting call of 15,000 hopefuls. She quickly rose to fame after the first season premiered in April, 2020.
By 2021, the accolades and opportunities were pouring in. Maitreyi was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, a Canadian Screen Award, and an MTV Movie & TV Award, and named as a Breakout Actor in Time 100’s Most Influential People. She was cast to voice the role of Priya in the Pixar animated film, Turning Red, and as lead character Lizzie Bennett in The Netherfield Girls, a Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice. She also switched her twice-deferred York University degree from theatre to human rights and equity studies — passionate about many social causes, Maitreyi is an ambassador for Plan International Canada, an organization focused on children’s rights and equality for girls, and leverages her platform to speak about issues that are meaningful to her.
